Dr Jennifer H Mike is an Assistant Professor of Law at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, Adamawa. She is also the HoD (Chair), the Department of Public and International Law (PIL), a Director of AUN’s Centre for Governance, Human rights and Development, and the Director of the Intersessional (Summer Program) at AUN. She also serves as the Faculty/Legal Advisor of the Law Students Society (LSS). In her capacity, she assists, advises, coordinates, and supervises activities of the Society. Dr Mike is also the Gender and Diversity Officer of the Academic and Professional Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA).

Dr Mike obtained her PhD at the University of Exeter, UK, LLM at London Metropolitan University and LLB at the University of Jos, Nigeria. At AUN, Dr Mike teaches Criminal Law, Human Rights Law, Gender Law and Development, and Labor Law. Dr Mike previously worked as a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant (PTA) with the University of Exeter. Her teaching portfolio includes tutoring undergraduates’ in criminal law. She also undertook workshop sessions and seminars to facilitate student’s learning.  As a qualified legal practitioner, Dr Mike has worked with the law firms of Atlantic Solicitors in the UK, Edu and Edu Solicitors, Lagos, and Streamsowers and Khon Solicitors, Lagos. Dr Mike was also the Legal Advisor/Company Secretary of EcoSpectra Ltd. 

Dr Mike was involved in the initial establishment and organization of activities of AUN’s Center for Governance, Development, and Human Rights, CGDHR, as a Co-Director of the Centre.

As a human rights advocate and activist, Dr Mike campaigned for women’s rights and worked with Project Restore, a UK charity as a Legal Advisor/Researcher. She contributes to the cause of human rights as an Amnesty International Volunteer. 

She also campaigned for prisoner’s rights and assisted in the provision of pro bono legal services to indigent suspects, detainees, women and juveniles in the Nigerian prison in Lagos State during her NYSC. 

Her teaching Qualifications include Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (LTHE) I & II, Professional Diploma in Education (PDGE), College of Education Yola (2020), and she is a fellow of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

Dr Mike has been active in attending and organizing international conferences. She has co-organized an International Conference on Human Rights and Medical Ethics which took place in Cameroon and drew many law and health-related experts from many African Countries. She also Co-Organized the Conference on The Human Right to Health and Corporate Responsibility in Sub-Saharan Africa which was held in Geneva Switzerland. The event was sponsored by an Ambizione grant from the Swiss National Foundation and Brocher Foundation, Switzerland. 

Dr Mike is the founder of the Mike and Nanre Bello Foundation which aims to inspire and steer teens and youth down the right path in life. She routinely organizes and coordinates Career and Motivation Workshops at Senior Secondary Schools. 

Dr Mike has offered policy advisory services and consultations to international and local organizations including GIZ/British Council and the Atiku Development Center.  She currently serves as one of the facilitators, resource personnel, and project Supervisor of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and AUN’s Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE) Course.

In 2022, she was recognized and awarded the Best Law School Female Faculty. Dr Mike is a member of Rotary International and as a past Club President, she has won an award for Best Club Humanitarian Project and Best Club President. She also served as an editor of the University of Jos Law Student’s magazine, ‘Law Stamina’

Dr Mike has written extensively on the right to health and other human rights issues and is a reviewer of several journals.

Her research interest is to further explore the connections between human rights and other disciplines.
